Apps for America 2 Technology Showdown

by

While the judging for Apps for America 2 rolls on, let’s do a little technology breakdown of the submissions. I’ll cut right to it:

  • PHP – 18
  • Java – 8
  • Ruby – 7
  • Python – 2
  • Processing – 2
  • Flash – 2
  • Pure JavaScript – 2
  • Google Spreadsheet – 2
  • Clojure – 1
  • Perl – 1
  • C# – 1
  • ASP.NET – 1
  • Facebook – 1
  • Firefox Extension – 1
  • iPhone – 1

The winner: PHP, with a strong plurality. Java and Ruby pull a strong 2nd and 3rd, respectively. The more striking thing to me is the impressive variety of technologies used to compete in this contest. Especially cool is that 2 projects chose to use Processing.

Thanks again to everyone for their hard work and submissions, and for making this contest so technology-rich!

P.S. If you’re wondering why the numbers add up to more than the number of submissions, it’s because some submissions fall into multiple categories (for example, the Facebook application is written in PHP).

P.P.S. In the interest of full transparency, you can see my source data for this list.
