Welcome to another post rounding up the week’s most notable deletions archived by Politwoops. We start with a curious deletion from the official account of Rep. Stephen Fincher, R-Tenn., that said “God I love this song. And beach music. AND shagging.” The tweet referred to the dance step variety of shagging (not the British slang) and was removed after being on his feed for nine hours. It included a link to the song “I Love Beach Music” by The Embers on Pandora.

Thanks to previous Politwoops appearances by Rep. Fincher’s official account that linked to his Communications Director Elizabeth Lauten’s Instagram account, this veteran deletion watcher quickly assumed it was her error. However, in an interview with The Hill’s In The Know, Lauten said, “a staffer’s Pandora account was somehow connected to the lawmaker’s Twitter account through a third-party application.” In a later interview with Politico, she confessed to being that staffer:

Lauten described the situation as “an accident,” saying that she was listening to a Pandora radio station when she decided to share the song with her Facebook friends. When she pressed share, Pandora also shared the post to Fincher’s Twitter account.

Lauten contacted Pandora to revoke access to the account, and once access was revoked the Tweet was automatically deleted. The staffer also insists that “shagging” was not a sexual reference, but a form of dance.

“Shagging is dancing to me, and it was no big deal being a North Carolina girl,” Lauten said.

Across the aisle, the official Twitter account of House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., deleted a tweet after 26 minutes in advance of her appearance at the U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit mentioning the “valuable relationship between our two countries.”

According to Rafiki Ministries, Pelosi was not the only member of Democratic leadership to make this error as Vice President Joe Biden referred to Africa as a country during his speech at the summit saying, ​”There’s no reason the nation of Africa cannot and should not join the ranks of the world’s most prosperous nations in the near term, in the decades ahead. There is simply no reason.” Sigh.

Finally, Sen. Mark Kirk, R-Ill., made some subtle messaging changes to two tweets about the recent discovery of weapons being stored at facilities run by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). By comparing deletions caught by Politwoops to Kirk’s official Twitter feed you can see the messaging changes from “Need to stop taxpayer-funded aid until we know their true intentions” to “we must ensure that taxpayer funds aren’t going to support terrorism” and “are they aiding the terrorist organization in their fight against #Israel?” to “are those weapons back in the fight against #Israel?”

Kirk has not responded to requests for comment, and we’ll update this post if we hear back. Other notable items in Politwoops this week include Rep. Ann Wagner, R-Mo., deleting congratulation to the Republicans who won (or one) their primaries, and an inexplicable deletion after three hours from the campaign account of Alaska’s Lt. Gov. and current Senate candidate Mead Treadwell that said, “Mead was the first non-Native board member of the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium. #aksen.”
