USA.gov. Government Gadget Gallery

USA.gov has posted a gallery of online gadgets (or widgets) that other Web sites can display.

Here’s an abbreviated list:

Defense and International Gadgets, where you can find a widget to thank American service members.

Energy, Environment, and Agriculture Gadgets, which has widgets on environmental tips, an Earth Day countdown clock and other green suggestions.

Family, Home, and Community Gadgets, which has a U.S. Postal Service track and confirm widget.

Health Gadgets, where you can find widgets dealing with drug safety, drug recalls, drug search, medical products and emergency text messages.

Public Safety and Law Gadgets, which has widgets on the FBI's most wanted fugitives, FBI news and history, predators and missing persons.

Reference and General Government Gadgets, where they provide a breaking government news widget, the GovGab blog and a Spanish language widget.

These are more encouraging signs that the federal government is catching on.

Keeping Tabs on Congress

I don’t know about you but I never have enough time in the morning to catch up on all the government transparency Web sites that I follow. But our staff has become really big on services like Netvibes which offer a great way to custom-build a Web page around the news and information you like to stay on top of using RSS feeds and widgets.

So the Sunlight communications team (thanks, Lizzie!)  has created just such a customized bird's eye view of what's happening with our projects and grantees. Sunlight's Netvibes Universe is now available as a public collection of the RSS feeds and widgets created by Sunlight and our partners. Head over to Sunlight's Universe (how epic, right?), to become Sunlight's friend, to keep up with the latest news from the major players in the sphere of online government information or to cherry pick the feeds you want to follow. You can also find Sunlight's presence on social networks, like Twitter and Facebook, and grab widgets from the Sunlight government transparency "ecosystem."

Sunlight also collected in Netvibes all those bloggers highlighted in outreach manager Nisha Thompson's Local Sunlight roundup who keep the sunlight shining on municipal and state governments. Let us know what you think.

Widget Week

Earlier this week we talked about all the cool new applications over at OpenCongress.org (which are really taking off), and today we're delighted to tell you that MAPLight.org has produced some new widgets that allow you to track fundraising for over 1,500 congressional candidates. These widgets are perfect for blogs, social networking pages, and personal Web sites, and they are completely customizable according to the candidates you are interested in.

The congressional money race widgets follow MAPLight.org's August release of presidential money race widgets that allow users to track funds raised by presidential candidates.
