Voters must take lead in campaign finance reforms

Republican senators defeated the DISCLOSE Act even after it had been watered down.

Republicans committed the dirty deed of dispensing with the DISCLOSE Act, which stands for Democracy Is Strengthened by Casting Light On Spending in Elections, because they know the special interest groups friendly to their party now hold the advantage. But the legislation was designed to ensure that groups of every political persuasion provide proper disclosure of their activities. It applied equally to corporations and unions, the National Rifle Association and MoveOn.org, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the Sierra Club.
