Washington, DC - The Obama administration is making an unparalleled amount of data available online today. The release, as part of the Open Government Directive, is further evidence that the administration is serious about increased government transparency and is committed to moving toward a more open way of operating. The Sunlight Foundation applauds this long-anticipated action by the administration and is pleased to see its own recommendations heeded.

"It is becoming clear that the administration believes that in order for government information to be public, it must be released online," said Ellen Miller, co-founder and executive director at Sunlight Foundation. “These moves represent a complete change in government’s attitude toward public information.”

The release of information under the Open Government Directive reinforces Sunlight's position that public information must be online by establishing timely Internet access as a priority for disclosing the operations, activities and data of the federal government. Cabinet level agencies have until the close of business today to make this information available. Sunlight’s Reporting Group is tracking the release of the data at its site, http://reporting.sunlightfoundation.com/.

The Sunlight Reporting Group will also be offering our own analysis of the data, weighing its quality and usefulness to journalists.
