Kathy Kiely is the managing editor for the Sunlight Foundation, where she works with a team of reporters and data experts to empower other journalists and citizens with the group’s powerful transparency tools. Prior to joining Sunlight in 2011, Kiely was the managing editor for politics at the National Journal, where she worked helped assemble and train a joint multimedia campaign coverage team for NJ and CBS News. Before that, she spent nearly a dozen years covering Congress and national politics for USA TODAY. Kiely, who has covered every presidential campaign since 1980, was graduated from Princeton University cum laude, a member of the fifth class to admit women. She holds a masters degree in interactive journalism from American University. She has worked for The Pittsburgh Press (her hometown paper), headed Washington bureaus for The Houston Post and The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, and was a White House correspondent for the New York Daily News. Kiely was a Knight Fellow at Stanford University in 1990-91. She has served on the Standing Committee of Correspondents, which handles press credentialing and logistics for Capitol Hill and the presidential nominating conventions, and is a member of the Gridiron Club, the National Press Club and is a trustee of The Daily Princetonian. She has served as a Ferris visiting professor of journalism at Princeton University and as an adjunct professor at American University and George Washington University.
