National News

  • Key documents in a state case with potential national ramifications were released this week. Prosecutors in Wisconsin have been investigating alleged illegal coordination between Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker’s campaign and several outside groups. The investigation is on hold, but the documents show, for the first time that prosecutors think Walker played a central roll in the coordination. (Green Bay Press Gazette)
  • Opinion: The FCC’s rulemaking process is a complicated and opaque maze. (The Hill)
  • The internet has brought unprecedented levels of transparency to government, especially when it comes to the personal financial interests of powerful officials. Only one group has avoided this transparency, the Supreme Court. (Washington Post)

International News

  • Another study is out touting the ability of open data to solve all of the worlds economic problems. With numbers like these it shouldn’t be a hard sell to get more countries into open data. (Future Gov)
  • Two young German’s left their country for a year to travel around the world, documenting open knowledge projects around the world. They are nearing the end of their journey, checking out projects in South America. (Open Knowledge)

State and Local News

  • Urban Reviewer, a new project that provides access to every urban renewal plan in New York City dating back to 1952, is the product of many volunteer hours. The group behind it hopes to identify vacant lots that were supposed to end up as public space. (Tech President)
  • Budget troubles may be pushing local officials towards open data thanks in part to increased flexibility in smaller governments and thriving civic hacker communities around the country. (Roll Call)
