On Tuesday morning, the Sunlight Live team will cover the second meeting of the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction providing viewers not only with context, fact checking and background but also live updates and pictures from the super committee meeting.

The upcoming meeting is poised to be more significant than the first one, with the Director of the Congressional Budget Office, Doug Elmendorf, testifying. In their statements last week, many legislators urged compromise and bipartisanship. However, one member Sen. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., threatened to abandon his post if more military spending cuts are proposed.

The super committee first met September 8 where each of the 12 members gave introductory statements to a crowd of at least 100, describing their attempts to create $1.5 trillion in budgetary savings by Thanksgiving. Protestors from OURDC, a non profit organization advocating for job growth in the District of Columbia, and Code Pink, a women-initiated grassroots peace and social justice movement, interrupted the meeting during opening remarks. Capitol Police swiftly removed them from the committee room.

Meanwhile, legislators on the committee have continued to fundraise for their campaings. On the day of the meeting, Rep. James Clyburn, D-S.C., Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash, Sen. Rob Portman, R-Ohio and Sen. John Kyl, R-Ariz., are all scheduled to fundraise at events where attendance costs between $500 to $1,000. 

Super committee member Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., told the Boston Globe last week that he will not meet with lobbyists or fundraise during deficit negotiations. However, Kerry is expected to fundraise with Senator Al Franken, D-Minn., at the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee the morning of September 19. As of noon Monday the host of the event, Maya Mahoney, said the fundraiser was continuing as scheduled.
