2Day in #OpenGov 8/28/2012
NEWS ROUNDUP:
Government
- Bipartisan disclosure holdouts in the Senate: Several weeks after the final deadline passed Senators John Kerry (D-MA) and Rand Paul (R-KY) still have not filed their personal financial disclosures. They are the only two members of either house of Congress who have yet to file. (Legistorm)
- Booze, bad puns, and a bus: Washington Lobbying firm Mehlman Vogel Castagnetti was tired of the usual convention events, so they decided to rent a bus, dub it Bus Force One, stock it with booze and food, and use it to ferry clients and friends around the Republican National Convention. (National Journal)
Campaign Finance
- Republican platform to oppose campaign finance disclosure? Anti-campaign finance regulation super lawyer Jim Bopp hinted that the 2012 Republican party platform will call for the repeal of McCain-Feingold and oppose the DISCLOSE Act. This is a stark reversal of previous platforms from 1996, 2000, and 2004. (Campaign Money)
- Wynning: Steve Wynn is challenging Sheldon Adelson for the title of “Casino Billionaire Spending the Most to Support Republican Politicians”. His company has given almost half a million dollars to the Republican State Leadership Committee and is reported to have donated millions to Karl Rove’s nonprofit Crossroads GPS. He has also spent $90,000 out of pocket to support Republican candidates this cycle. (Politico)
- Outside cash drives Romney ad machine: Four out of every five dollars spent since April on advertising to boost Mitt Romney’s presidential bid has come from sources that are not the Romney campaign. By contrast, President Obama’s reelection campaign has paid for at least 75% of the ads aired to boost his candidacy. (Politico)
