The U.S. intelligence community needs stronger congressional oversight

by

Today, Sunlight joined a broad coalition of 33 organizations calling on the U.S. House of Representatives to strengthen congressional oversight of the U.S. intelligence community.

A new letter to Speaker of the House Paul Ryan and Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi calls for a broad review of the actions of the intelligence community since 9/11, modeled after the 9/11 Commission, modernization of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, and empowering all members of Congress, from improved transparency to increased access to whistleblower engagement. The specifics of the recommendations are available in a new white paper that is freely available to the public and Congress alike.

The video below features voices from many of Sunlight’s allies in this effort explaining why strengthening oversight in Congress matters.

As the House Rules Committee prepares to meet tomorrow on the rules for the 115th Congress, we join our allies in putting more sunlight on the urgent need for our representatives to expand and improve the oversight and governance of the most powerful surveillance system in the history of humankind.
