I was just having a conversation about the etymology of the word “transparent” with some coworkers. Luckily, the Internet has the Concise Oxford Dictionary of English Etymology. For what it’s worth:

transparent that can be seen through XV; (fig.) XVI. — (O)F. transparent — medL. transpārēns, -ent-, f. L. TRANS- + pārēre APPEAR.
