Alleged foreign agent Syed Fai gave $28K to federal candidates
Syed Ghulem Fai, who faces charges of not registering as a lobbyist for Pakistan under the Foreign Agent Registration Act, or FARA, contributed $28,790 to federal candidates since 1990, a TransparencyData.com search of Center for Responsive Politics data shows. Rep. Dan Burton, R-Ind., was the top recipient among politicians with $10,290.
Failing to register as a foreign agent is a criminal offense; violators can be imprisoned for up to five years and fined up to $10,000. Prosecutions under the act are rare, but not unheard of. Anna Chapman, the glamorous Russian who was deported in 2010, was charged, along with nine others, of failing to register under FARA.
