Screenscraping in the Former Soviet Bloc

A couple of weeks ago I had the chance to go to Georgia and hang out with the folks at the Tbilisi chapter of Transparency International. It was a great opportunity to learn about a part of the world that I was completely unfamiliar with, to share some technical knowledge, and -- somewhat unexpectedly -- to gain some perspective on the work we do at Sunlight.

Washington Post cites Russian role in Kyrgyzstan unrest

The Washington Post reports that "Kremlin-friendly television stations and newspapers" and Russian economic sanctions played a key role in the toppling of Kyrgyz President Kurmanbek Bakiyev.

Though Bakiyev fled the country on April 7, he has refused to resign his post.

Kyrgyzstan provides a key air base to U.S. forces engaged in Afghanistan. Allegations of corruption in supplying the base by officials figured in the toppling of both the previous government and that of Bakiyev, according to the New York Times.

Local Sunlight

Keeping track of congressional information starts at the local level, and blogs do a great job of informing people about what is happening in their own backyard. I have been reading local blogs for quite a while and have been very impressed with the coverage on local ethics issues and congressional information.
