In The Beginning There Was Light:

by

Welcome to In Broad Daylight, a Sunlight blog aimed at tracking news and blogs that cover the many creatures in today's Washington including members of Congress, lobbyists, campaign contributions, private junkets, earmarks, deals, and, yes, sometimes crooks. If you want to discover what your members of Congress are up to, and who's talking about it, this is the place to come. If you want to contribute to an open discussion about what's going on in Washington this is the place to be as I will need your help to shine light on the dark corners of Washington. If you want to know more about the Sunlight Foundation you can read Jeff Birnbaum’s article in today’s Washington Post or just go ahead and explore the site. I’ve been posting here at In Broad Daylight for quite a while and you should go ahead and check out my previous posts to get a taste of what we’re going to be talking about here. I hope that you join the conversation.

In the Beginning…..

by

When Mike Klein took me out to lunch last fall – and started off by quoting Justice Brandeis’ adage “Sunlight in the best of disinfectants….” I responded: “…Electric light the most efficient policeman.” If you can finish someone else’s somewhat obscure quote about “transparency” odds are you are destined to be partners.

Even though Mike and I didn’t know it at the time, it was at that moment that the idea of creating the Sunlight Foundation came into existence – the notion of creating a new institution that focuses on enabling citizens to become their own watchdogs for the express purpose of giving them the tools to shine thousands, indeed perhaps millions, of flashlights on what Congress is doing. Sunlight’s goal is to provide tools, information and resources to encourage citizens, bloggers and investigative media to explore whether and/or how their representatives influenced by money and lobbyists, to provide ways to engage their natural curiosity about who their representatives really represent and what they do in Washington, and to provide forums and interactions to build the community of people who care about our democracy.

Coming soon!

by

We are certainly in count down mode here, battening down all our hatches for our launch next Wednesday. We're putting the final initial touches on the Congresspedia. We're lining up an extensive ad buy --  buying space on 175 blogs, ranging from Talking Points Memo and Daily Kos to Real Clear Politics and Blogs For Bush and buying the name of every single member of Congress on Google ad words! Our press kits will include really nifty Congresspedia mouse pads which surely we will use later as prizes. Bill Allison is working hard on just the right initial distributed journalism assignment and Larry Makinson is polishing his first tutorial on money and politics. Paul Blumenthal has been reading widely for his feature In Broad Daylight, our one stop must-read for what's being reported today on what's happening in Congress. There's more to report but  have to keep this short because I am being bugged by our communication team -- Group Gordon -- to make some pre-press calls. More later!

Trim Tab Factor

by

On Tuesday night, Mike Klein and I (along with our consultants Micah Sifry and Andrew Rasiej of the Personal Democracy Forum) had the incredible opportunity to brainstorm with some of the best and the brightest from the New York tech community about the Sunlight Foundation's initial plans. The group, which dubs itself "The Trim Tab Conspiracy," is a collaborative conversation that happens regularly to explore, debate, and improvise on the latest uses of technology. I'm not sure I've ever been in a meeting where the creative ideas flowed as fast, where the collaboration was so genuine, or where the energy level was so high.
